My experience with gender variance begins in the 1970’s when as a college student I acted at LaMama theater with some of the stars from Club 82. Little did I know what the future would hold. In 1979 I did a plastic surgery rotation at the Stanford University Transgender Clinic. Unfortunately academic transgender surgical programs like Stanford’s and Hopkins were phased out and transgender surgical practice was continued in just a few clinical settings in the United States. As my clinical practice evolved, my transgender patient population increased and became of particular interest to me.
I love my transgender patients. The “trans” patient is courageous, risking everything to be “true to oneself”.They epitomize what plastic surgery is. Unlike other specialties that are about skin, bone, or eyes, plastic surgery is about change and what is more transformative than the journey of the gender variant.
I am humbled and grateful to my patients. If you allow me the privilege to care for you, I will do all in my power to be a decent person, compassionate doctor, a skilled artistic plastic surgeon and you have my pledge not to violate the trust you give me.
